This article was published in the January 20, 1999, issue of JAMA. It reported on a survey of 599 college students at a large Midwestern university that found that only 40% of the students considered oral sex to be "having sex." The article was published at the same time that President Bill Clinton was being impeached by the House of Representatives for perjury and obstruction of justice, and some critics accused the journal's editor, Dr. George Lundberg, of publishing the article in an attempt to influence the impeachment proceedings. Lundberg was fired from his position as editor of JAMA shortly after the article was published.
